Should You Deep Clean Your Home Before or After Pest Control?

Short answer: deep clean BEFORE the treatment, not after. The spray and gel we use keep working for weeks — mopping them away afterwards is the #1 reason a treatment seems to 'fail'. Here's how to clean around a treatment the right way.

It’s the question we hear on almost every booking: “Should I deep clean the house before you come — or after?” The answer is before. Do your thorough clean before the treatment, then leave the treated areas alone afterwards. Here’s why the timing matters so much: the spray and gel a professional uses are long-lasting on purpose — they keep killing pests for weeks after the visit. If you mop, wipe or scrub those treated areas afterwards, you remove the product and it stops protecting you. That’s the single most common reason a treatment seems to “stop working” — and why people call asking for a re-visit when nothing was wrong with the treatment at all.

The rule in one line

Deep clean before. Don’t deep clean after.

Do this
Before the visit Do your proper deep clean — floors, surfaces, declutter, clear cupboards. Ideally a day or so ahead.
After the visit Don’t mop, wipe or scrub the treated areas (skirting, edges, corners, cracks, gel dots) for about 2 weeks, or as your technician advises.
After the visit Normal daily cleaning is fine — wipe kitchen counters and anywhere you prepare food, do the dishes, a light sweep of open floors.

Why cleaning after the treatment backfires

Modern pest control isn’t a one-second spray that’s gone by evening. A residual treatment leaves a thin, low-odour film along skirting boards, edges and entry points that keeps killing insects for weeks. Cockroach gel bait works the same way — it has to stay in place so roaches feed on it and carry it back to the nest, wiping out the colony over days.

Mop the floor edges or wipe down the skirting a few days later and you physically remove that product. The protection is gone, surviving pests come back, and it looks like the treatment failed. It didn’t — the cleaning undid it. This is exactly why, when a customer calls a week or two later saying “the cockroaches are back, I want a re-visit under the guarantee,” the first question is: did you mop or deep clean after we treated? Nine times out of ten, that’s what happened.

So the smart move is to get all your heavy cleaning done before, so the house is already clean when it’s treated — and then you simply don’t need to deep clean again for a couple of weeks while the product does its job.

Before the treatment: this is the time to deep clean

Because you’ll be leaving the treated zones alone afterwards, before is when to do the thorough clean. Aim for a day or so ahead rather than the same hour we arrive:

  • Clean floors, surfaces and cupboards and declutter — clutter is where cockroaches hide, and clear access lets the technician reach the harbourage where pests actually live.
  • Put food away, do the dishes, empty the bin. Open food competes with the bait and gives pests an alternative meal.
  • Follow your specific prep list. Bed bug and cockroach jobs come with targeted prep — washing and bagging fabrics, emptying cupboards. If you’re cleaning the kitchen around Ramadan cooking, our Ramadan kitchen pest prep guide covers the routine.
  • On treatment day, just tidy and give access. No need to wet-scrub the exact skirting and cracks right before we treat them — freshly drenched surfaces make it harder for the product to bind. A clean, dry, accessible home is perfect.

After the treatment: what to leave alone, and for how long

Approximate — always follow the specific instructions your technician leaves, which vary with the product used:

Treatment Leave the treated areas alone for You can still clean
General residual spray (skirting, edges) ~2 weeks before mopping or scrubbing those edges Food-prep surfaces, dishes, a light sweep of open floors
Cockroach gel bait Until the bait dots are gone or the technician removes them — never wipe cracks, hinges or corners The rest of the kitchen surfaces
Fogging / misting (mosquito, fly) Ventilate and let surfaces settle per instructions (usually a few hours), then wipe food surfaces Everything else once dry
Bed bug treatment Don’t scrub treated seams, frames or joints; keep to the re-treatment schedule Vacuum daily (it helps), launder fabrics hot as prepped
Termite (soil / barrier) Don’t disturb treated soil, drill points or the perimeter Interior surfaces, as normal

One thing that surprises people: you’ll often see more cockroach activity for the first few days. That’s the bait pulling them out of hiding — it’s the treatment working, not failing. Sweep up the dead ones, but don’t wash down the area.

“So my home stays dirty for two weeks?”

No — that’s the whole point of cleaning before. Your home is already clean, and you can keep doing normal daily cleaning afterwards: wipe the counters and dining table, do the dishes, sweep the open middle of the floor, clean the bathrooms. The only rule is to avoid the treated edges, cracks and any visible bait dots. Everything in the “living” part of the room is fair game — it’s only the thin treated band along the edges you leave alone.

Frequently asked questions

Should I clean before or after pest control? Before. Do your deep clean before the treatment, then leave the treated areas (skirting, edges, cracks, bait dots) alone for about two weeks so the long-lasting product keeps working.

The pests came back after I mopped — is the treatment faulty? Almost always, no. Mopping and deep cleaning remove the residual spray and gel that were still protecting your home, so surviving pests return. That’s exactly why we ask you not to deep clean the treated areas for a couple of weeks. If you’ve followed that and pests are still active, then it’s time for a re-visit — our treatments are warranty-backed.

When can I mop and deep clean again? Usually after about two weeks for a general residual treatment, or once the technician confirms — for gel bait, once the bait is gone. After that, clean away as normal; the product has done its job.

Can I wipe my kitchen counters and cook straight away? Yes — always keep food-prep surfaces clean, and you can usually cook once treated surfaces are dry (often a few hours). It’s only the treated edges and cracks you leave alone. We use municipality-approved, low-exposure methods — see pet-safe & child-safe pest control.

Why am I seeing more cockroaches after the treatment, not fewer? Normal for the first few days — the bait draws them out of hidden voids before it works through the colony. Numbers drop sharply after that. Don’t wipe the bait away in a rush to clean up.

Clean before, then let it work

The best result from a single visit comes from working with the treatment: get your deep clean done before so the home is spotless when it’s treated, then leave the treated areas alone for a couple of weeks while the long-lasting product protects you. Clean after too soon and you wash away the very thing you paid for. It’s the same principle in an apartment or a villa — and following it is what makes a treatment (and its guarantee) actually hold.
